John Jack's topographical masterpiece "The Fishquay Berwick on Tweed" depicting the old town, bridge and aquaduct, with figures and boats, is signed and inscribed to the verso and also signed and dated to the fore, bottom left.

Biographic:

Jack was an Edinburgh artist painting extensively in Scotland and the North East, throughout the latter part of the 19C.


He flourished 1872-1891, painting mainly landscapes and coastal scenes. With a studio at 14 Raeburn Place, Edinburgh, in 1872, and 1 Hermitage Place Edinburgh, from 1873. Considered to be his 'Masterpiece', this painting has been in Canada since before 1900.


With a fine provenance handed down from the Scarfe estate in Ontario. Jack exhibited widely including at the Glasgow Art Gallery and the Royal Scottish Academy where this wonderful painting once hung.
