Sterling Silver Faberge Box
When the city of Calgary is named, the first thoughts that come to this appraiser’s mind are the Calgary Stampede, The Calgary Flames and the host city of the 1988 Winter Olympics. As an appraiser I wondered if any treasures would be unearthed that didn’t have connections to sports, the oil industry or the Rocky Mountains. What a wonderful surprise to have a stunningl sterling silver box sitting on the appraisal mat bearing that magical name of Faberge! The large cabochon gem set in gold appeared to be a perfect sapphire. Every appraiser of silver vertu waxes eloquent when examining an article produced by the renowned House of Faberge, Goldsmith by Special Appointment to the Imperial Crown. Peter Carl Faberge was born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1846 to a jeweler and his Danish wife. The House of Faberge is famous of course for the production of Imperial Easter Eggs. This tradition started with Czar Alexander III who commissioned Faberge to make an Easter egg as a special gift for his wife, the Empress Maria. Each subsequent year, an egg was ordered and had a special surprise hidden inside. Faberge, along with his brother Agathon, revived the lost art of enameling and eventually became the largest jewelry business in Russia. When Carl Faberge died in Switzerland in 1920 after the Bolshevik Revolution had nationalized The House of Faberge, it was said that he died of a broken heart due in part to the Russian Revolution. It is always a privilege to appraise items of both historical importance and quality manufacture and this box was no exception.

Spring Roadshow 2007, Calgary Alberta
Chiparus Bronze
Condition, condition, condition! The condition of any item will ultimately be one of the deciding factors in the appraisal value. Such was the case in Calgary, Alberta, in the spring of 2007. The sculpture was of a bejeweled figure most likely meant to depict a stage actress of early theatre. She was standing on a 2 level striated marble base and was quite breathtaking…until the examination showed definite condition problems with the collar that surrounded her lovely ivory head and neck. Grandmother had tried to clean up the lovely lady using steel wool and as a result had left deep scratches in the cold-painted surface. Cold painting is when the painted decoration on an object is not fired, but surface painted thus leaving it susceptible to damage and wear. This was a real life no-no as the sculpture was a Chiparus Bronze! Demetre Chiparus (1886-1947) was a Romanian born sculptor who studied his craft in France. He employed a technique known as chryselephantine to great effect. Chryselephantine is a method that combines ivory and a metal, usually bronze, and was used quite extensively during the Art Deco era (1918-1940). The works of Demetre Chiparus are quite valuable and if this one had been in pristine condition, value would have been in the thousands of dollars. Once again, care and condition of any heirloom or collectible cannot be emphasized enough! |
