 John Anthony Park, a Lancastrian by birth and the star pupil of Julius Olsonn and Algernon Mayow Talmages's art school in St Ives, had the benefit of also being trained in Paris at the Académie Colarossi under Auguste Joseph Delecluse.

 Subsequently, he is perhaps best known for his bright, impressionistic colour and light filled paintings of boats in St Ives harbour Cornwall, but he also painted still lifes. It was widely regarded that; "He painted like an angel - simply cathedrals of light."

 Works of his compositionally intricate calibre and quality are rarely if ever faked, copied, possibly. Though certainly impressionist works can be and are and simply by adding a signature, monogram, or a persuasive inscription, or gallery label to a previously anonymous work, this is a common place fraud. With such imitation aimed clearly an attempted criminal deception. That kind of addition is usually to a previously unsigned or marked work of the same type or manner of the artist it is claiming to be by.

 Sadly, paintings are sometimes deliberately misrepresented, sometimes simply misjudged and misattributed to a particular hand. That of course can be either be an honest mistake, or an intentional ploy and it also can have been effected at any time, either in the present or indeed the past.

 Some of the believed to be John Anthony Park works that do surface, will need a far deeper investigation of their authenticity to be absolutely certain of both legitimacy, or that a previously given attribution is indeed correct.

The provenance and history associated with a work of art also must ne scrutinized to determine if it is valid and sound. Or that any description of a work of art claiming to be by him is correct and can truly be relied upon.

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND TERMINOLOGY

John Anthony Park

  It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case the paintings and drawings of John Anthony Park.

 Where the name, John Anthony Park,is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually as John Anthony Park, then in their professional opinion they are in no doubt, it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself, John Anthony Park .

 When Attributed to John Anthony Park , similarly written or used, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But... there is no guarantee. It's only an opinion.

 When John Anthony Park; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of John Anthony Park" or atelier" is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or even a pupil under the principal artists supervision.

But it may be contemporary, or nearly contemporary of the artist.

 If the phrase in the “Manner of John Anthony Park, is used or is defined….” Then in their opinion it's a work painted in the style of the artist but of a later date and definitely not by the artist himself.

 When the term “After….John Anthony Park "; is the term, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original..

 John Anthony Park ; “Signed…”, “Dated….” or “Inscribed John Anthony Park ” Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark however, indicates a strong element of doubt.

 When the term John Anthony Park is used followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature John Anthony Park /date/or inscription” Then in their opinion, the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
