Art Authentication & Attribution Investigations - Before you begin
* Before embarking on a full investigation of the authenticity of a work of art, it is essential to know if the project is viable and responsible enough to pursue it further. So we prefer to make a preliminary and vital professional pre authentication assessment for clients first. One based upon the images you supply and the full details of the items history and provenance and its acquisition details as is known to you. This is a logical and cost effective professional assessment and advisory for which there is a modest set fee. Please see our FAQ's which explains the processes in detail.

Is this a Dutch old master painting by Willem van Aelst from the Golden age of Dutch painting, or is this painting just another modern reproduction, sold with convincingly dark stained wooden panels, fresh out of Amsterdam or Antwerp and believed to be real and being sold at at art auctions all over the world? Yes we see a lot of these deceptions! A question though. Could it be by the old master van Aelst himself, or by his student Rachel Ruysch? Perhaps it's someone from his circle of influence or just someone painting in his style Perhaps it's a later student copy by an trainee artist working in the Rijksmuseum in 1850, or just another modern fake bearing that famous name?

Willem van Aelst authentication |
Ask the same question of the typical Dutch landscape painting below. This depicts the port of Dordrecht by
Aelbert Jacobsz Cuyp, one of the Golden Age's most prolific artists and one of the most wrongly attributed names of all Dutch artists paintings that we see. With his name attached to both
works by Abraham Calraet alongside down and out
fakes and unsigned works of a similar type. |

Modern Fake Dutch Florals |
We know all too well that Han van Meegren brilliantly duped the worlds art experts with his remarkable fakes of the great Dutch master Johannes Vermeer. Of the works of Vincent Van Gogh no less than 45 which are hanging in museums and galleries across the world are controversial and currently questioned. Previously attributed or authenticated as legitimate, with more and more coming through our doors today, they are believed to be legitimate but they are more simply described, modern day fakes. But what of the other great Dutch and Flemish artists and which names appear regularly on our authentication investigation work load? You may be surprised to learn about them. Read more below.

DAVID TENIERS (Flemish Artist) Teniers art authentication Teniers modern Fake
The Flemish artist David Teniers' name comes up constantly in the fakes stakes, with questionable works requiring in depth analysis and investigation because his paintings have been both faked, copied and emulated for centuries. The subject matter was popular and his style and manner commercially sought after in his time. But David Teniers didn't help the modern day authenticators and art experts when he had no problem with signing works painted by his pupils with his own name! |

ANTON MAUVE ART AUTHENTICATION Was a Dutch artist who apprenticed to the artist Pieter Frederik van Os, a man who specialised in painting cattle. Mauve became one of the most prominent figures in the art world and has a style which is not that difficult for the fakers to emulate. We see an ever increasing number of Anton Mauve fakes today with many unsigned works which are similar in style having added signatures all too frequently added to them to deceive and defraud. |
