Investigating & Confirming the Authenticity & Attributions of Works of Art believed to be by:
Caspar Netscher & Workshop
(Heidelberg 1639-1684 The Hague) Dutch Signed Netscher - C Netscher & C.Netscher f
After training with the Dutch pioneer golden age genre painter Gerard ter Borch, Netscher left his studio for the Hague, where he painted portraits, genre scenes and history pieces, but latterly limited his output mainly to portraiture for commercial reasons. For posterity, not only did he made records of the patrons he served and the sales particulars, but also made drawings of the finished works, with notes on the compositions and colouring. In his now regularly busy studio, he created finely crafted portraits for his distinguished clients, cleverly positioning them before elegant draperies and furnishings, near a window with distant views of imaginary landscapes. This gave him international standing and a serious following, regularly welcoming high ranking influential nobles to his workshop, even selling reworks of many genre paintings he had copied from his successful tutor.
Many of his works do fetch astonishingly high prices at auction today and some, as will be seen from the examples set out below, considerably outstrip their auction estimates. But as with all successful artists whose works achieve such high monetary values, this is clearly open to both mistakes, such as historically incorrect attributions and even abuse, made today by either mistakenly ascribing a work to a hand, or deliberately so, devised to deceive potential buyers. But there is also a more straightforward form of deception that we encounter that is all too common and has been an enterprise carried on for centuries. The fraud most often undertaken by the simple addition of a forged signature or monogram to an otherwise similar work of reasonable age. One just of type, form or subject, that was actually created by an anonymous follower of the artist. This can be a major work, or a relatively minor one, even sketches, studies or a sketch book composition. All are prized and are potentially valuable commodities. It is very important to understand the terminology used in describing a work of art for sale at auction, as this drastically alters the possible sale result. Equally, in terms of the possibility of asserting the legitimacy of a work of art, or underpinning an attribution, either to the artist, or someone just painting like him, is a vital formal task we can assist you with and advise upon.

This is a logical and cost effective professional review and advisory for which there is a modest set fee. Our FAQ section covers this in more detail.
We will respond to you promptly.
* ABOUT A WORK OF ARTS DESCRIPTOR AND ITS TERMINOLOGY * As if in this case as if they were defining the works of the artist;
Caspar Netscher (Heidelberg 1639-1684 The Hague) Dutch
*It is very important to clearly understand the general auction terms that are widely used in a published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be created in the 'manner of' the artist, or those which could be variants of the artists works of art that 'bear an applied signature' or monogram.
We can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters.
