Astoundingly, art experts estimate that today as many as 80 per cent of all Russian works of art offered for sale in a market worth millions are actually forgeries.
As a result and for about the past year or so, Russia’s art market has faced its worst crisis of confidence in the post-Soviet era. Though for many years there have been suspicions about the source of fake antique icons which has become accepted as the norm.
Today, even the avant-garde works by artists such as Alexander Rodchenko, Malevich, Popova, Vasily Kandinsky and Goncharova are attracting bigger and bigger prices at auction and are subject to faking to an industrial degree. |

Fake suprematist compositions, as with targets like the Malevich above, which are built up from simple geometric elements and easy to replicate began to hit the art market in the 80's. Now its the turn of Altman, Ivan Bilibin, Ilya Chashnik, David Shterenberg and Udaltsova. Alexander Kiselev, Ivan Shishkin, Vasily Polenov, Feodor Vasiliyev, Potinokov, Alexei Jawlensky, Vladimir Orlovski, Alexej Harlamoff are prime for faking as they command good returns at auction. None are safe.
