Poppies by Van Gogh. Now regarded by some as a fake executed by a follower.
|
It is well recorded about the controversy that has been reigning for many years regarding the authenticity of some forty oil paintings previously attributed to Vincent van Gogh. They may in fact actually have been executed by one of his pupils, someone within his circle or even deliberately faked right back at the turn of the century. Scholars constantly challenge and raise issues about them.
On average & annually, Freemanart investigate around a dozen newly discovered paintings and drawings believed to be by Vincent van Gogh for clients around the world. Nearly all of the van Gogh's have a story, perhaps bought in a flea market in Amsterdam in the forties or found in an old trunk in the attic. Most of these can be reliably put down as down and out and relatively new fake works of art designed to deceive and profit by the fraud. Some are simply student copies of lesser known works which have innocently found their way into collections at some point in the past. Others are painted in the style of van Gogh by followers and need confirmation of wrongful attribution OR of their authenticity. It's the ones bearing that famous van Gogh signature however which are the problem and the most controversial.
