 Vibrant colour used straight from the tube and overly simplified forms splashed with bold impasto brush strokes, were the chief characteristics of the paintings of Andre Derain.

A new and genius mix of Impressionism and Pointillism were the Fauvists of the early 20th century, concentrating their efforts in the main on French landscapes, seascapes, nudes of course and typical French interiors.

 Derain famously said;" We were always intoxicated with colour, with words that speak of colour and with the sun that makes the colours live But they were all too easily faked.

One illicit gang of German art forgers made millions out their of fakes in recent years and even duped, not without great embarrassment, some of the greatest and well respected auction houses there are.

The case of Wolfgang Beltracchi is well documented and does not need to be repeated here, but for all the forgers that are now tucked away in jail, there must be dozens who are still plying their trade. Buying period, poor quality amateur canvasses is the starting point for the fakers, finding vintage paint next, which is not that difficult and making up a new painting that fits into a sequence of real works by that artist, must have been a piece of cake for the best of them.

 In recent years an ever growing number of paintings bearing the name André Derain have been placed in auctions and as the values of works of art by him consistently climb higher, there is an ever greater need for confirmation of legitimacy.

So it would follow, that any works of art that do surface will require both a comprehensive and thorough investigation of their backgrounds and their authenticity. With similar scrutiny made for confirmation that any previously given attribution is correct and that any description of a work of art seemingly by André Derain can truly be relied upon.
