The Cuban Picasso

 Spanish police from Valencia, seized a total of eighteen fake paintings that were wrongly attributed to Wilfredo Lam that had originated from Cuba that could have fetched millions on the open market. Thirteen people, including the paintings owners and various intermediaries and art dealers were investigated.

 With such very high values of his paintings prevailing in the art market today and escalating and the wide demand even for even modest works, then attempts at imitation by forgery is an obvious but sad consequence. 

  Lam's works have become increasingly popular over the years, particularly with affluent Cuban Americans and as demand grew and outstripped the product available, along came the fakers, flooding the art market with both high quality and poor Cuban fakes too.

Take a stroll through any internet auction sale platform you wish to and you will see works at times offered for sale claiming to be original Wilfredo Lam works of art. Including pastels, gouaches and paintings. All are priced to sell though at a few thousand dollars or so. But bear in mind, even his legitimate limited edition prints sell for tens of thousands of dollars each.

 Works of art that do surface, or that individuals may own or have inherited, will require a comprehensive and thorough investigation of their legitimacy. The same applies to their backgrounds and provenance and similar scrutiny should be given to confirm that any previously given attribution is correct. So too that a description of a work of art itself seemingly by Wifredo Lam can truly be relied upon.
