 Renoir of course did not only paint figurative studies & portraits, his still lives and landscapes too are often fabricated as this fake Renoir landscape (below) which appeared for sale on Ebay recently testifies!

Authenticating the Art of  Pierre - Auguste Renoir

 Many of the Renoir fakes we see at Freemanart are actually copies of original Renoir paintings or in some cases, proportionate parts of them.

They are sometimes compilations  of other known works too, which is a favourite ploy of the modern day faker. This then becomes a fake Renoir painting whereby the faker takes images or elements from within other works of art by Renoir or any other artist and cleverly introduces and manipulates them into a brand new composition or work of art purportedly by that artist.

 Another favourite scam is to use an image taken from within one of Renoir's known legitimate works of art and invent new studies in paint or crayon or sometimes pastel to make us believe that a previously undiscovered Renoir study which has come to light

  There are many well known forgers of Renoir including Tom Keating, Elmer de Hory and the German artist Edgar Mrugalla, whose 'Bathers by Renoir' is shown below to illustrate just how adept and talented the art faker can be. Perhaps just a little too bright though, but clever enough to convince or deceive an unsuspecting buyer!
