Raoul Dufy's colourful and lively watercolors have always captured the very essence of France and the French way of life during the early 1900's.
But with Raoul Dufy's popularity surging as he brought to life images of the Cote D'Azur and the Riviera, yachting scenes and colourful regattas, horse racing and socialite parties, his paintings values and prices have risen incredibly, bringing with it an influx of Dufy forgers and fakers, intent on making a killing by introducing effective and convincing Raoul Dufy fakes and forgeries onto the open art market, at whatever cost to those who fall for them.
In 1967 Elmyr de Hory was exposed for forging works of art pretending to be by Dufy, Picasso, and Derain. Britain's Tom Keating openly admitted to creating Raoul Dufy fakes. As did John Myatt. So to did Frenchman Geert Jan Jansen. He faked dozens, both watercolours and oil paintings claiming to be by Dufy too.
Police are now investigating whether a modern day forger who conned both Lempertz and Christies the major auctioneers out of over £30 million in modern masters, including forgeries of Dufy's paintings, is a man called Wolfgang Beltracchi, 59, an artist from Freiburg, aided by his wife, Helene, 52, and her sister, Susanne, 57.

Hugely influenced by the French artist Henri Matisse and the Fauvist group, Raoul Dufy developed a unique style full of vigour and colour. Such as the typical watercolour works of Paris and a floral group painted by Raoul Dufy below. Sadly, paintings which are so easily emulated and faked today.
