The relatively modern French artist Edouard Cortès is not one you would readily imagine is being faked internationally, but you would be very wrong. Edouard Cortes must count today as one of the most faked artists of the past decade. Edourd Cortes' delightful enigmatic post impressionist paintings of suburban and Parisian city life, painted showing the city in all weathers, both nocturnal and seasonal, are fine depictions of Paris life and extremely popular and thus seen as commercial enterprises throughout the world. Unlike many French artists, Edouard Cortes paintings are still relatively affordable for the art investor and the market values are still on the rise. |

Unfortunately, Edouard Cortes' style and manner is not that unique and has been and still is relatively easily emulated and faked. Remember, the easiest thing for an unscrupulous faker to do be he artist or crooked dealer, is to simply add a valuable name, like Cortez, Galien-Laloue, Luigi Loir, or Jean Beraud's name to a pre existing Parisian painting or work of art which vaguely resembles their own works and he is away. |

I remember the time when good quality Cortes works fetched only around 500 to 600 Euros at auction and they were plentiful. After all, he was a very prolific painter and produced thousands of such Paris street scene works. Suddenly the prices started to rise and with that ever rising tide, up shot the values and at the same time, up popped the fakers and art fraudsters.
One Belgian auctioneer's room we visited to assist with authentication had a gaggle of Cortes paintings on the wall of the auction room ready for the hammer, which when we lit with a black light had more dancing fake signatures than in a Degas ballet! Of nine Edouard Cortes works on display there, seven had added or faked signatures.

Taught by his father the Spanish painter Antonio Cortes, the French born child prodigy Edouard Cortes attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at only 19 years of age in 1901 had his first exhibition at the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris to great acclaim.
Édouard Cortès, along with other artists like Eugene Galien-Laloue , Luigi Loir and Jean Beraud, supplied the rising demand for these fascinating paintings, but all are massively faked. |
