Conducting Professional Investigations into the Authenticity of Hungarian Paintings and Drawings Lőrinc Farkas Csallóközi (1898-1966) Hungarian
|
The Hungarian landscape artist, Lőrinc (László) Farkas, Csallóközi, sometimes known as Csallóköz, was born on January 18, 1898 in the village of Lakszakállas in the Csallóköz hinterland. This is a beautiful region of Hungary and one of the most fertile agricultural areas in south western Slovakia. Lying just north of the river Danube and giving rise to the origin of his own name. This then is where Farkas' obvious passion for painting landscape and Hungarian environments was born and sealed.

Showing a keen love of art at an early age, Farcas was sent first to study at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts, known widely as the the MKE, (Magyar Képzőművészeti Egyetemunder ) whilst under the leadership of the eminent Hungarian painter Pál Szinyei Merse. Deeply immersed and committed to his artistic training, Farkas was to rub shoulders with some of the greatest artists Hungary has ever produced and the direction and breadth of his art education was as comprehensive as it was diverse.

< This large, rare and very early oil on canvas, a still life study of a cauliflower, jug, corn and apples (Csendélet, karfiol, kancsó, kukorica és almas,) signed Lőrinc Farkas Csallóközi and dated 1916, was painted when Farkas Lorinc was only 18 years of age and still in training in Budapest at the MKE - Magyar Képzőművészeti Egyetemunder. It must have been special to him as it was a painting he would keep for himself and one featuring in one of a set of rare and uncharacteristic paintings he made of his home. Private Collection UK |

Looking towards Tata: Oil on panel. Csallóközi Farkas Lőrinc Private Collection UK |
But it was to rural Hungary that Farcas returned and settled near Tata, a baroque town in northwestern Hungary and where his most accomplished paintings were created. Other regional Hungarian towns and villages and rural life were to feature regularly in his painting; Tótfalu, Hermena and Tabán too were favourite places of his to work. He painted here extensively, making small impressionist studies of the local landscape, many including horses, farms and their workers. Village houses, marketplaces, mills and snowy streets are also common features. There are some works painted in watercolour but the vast majority of his oeuvres are in oil.

In 1927, he was commissioned by the City Council of the town of Gyula to organize the first ever art colony there included at its inception were the artists János Szöllősi, Gábor Kása and Márton Csapó. Which after ninety years still has a strong and pioneering cultural presence in Hungary. A prolific artist, he Exhibited at the Nemzeti Szalon (National Salon) in 1928 and was by 1930 a member of A FÜGGETLEN MŰVÉSZEK
TÁRSASÁGA. The Company of independent artists where he exhibited 4
paintings and won an honourable mention. László Farkas Csallóközi remains something of a mystery in Hungarian art as there is little more known or recorded about his life. Other than he seems to disappear from view in the 1930's. |

Both unique and unusual for Farcas Lorinc are these rare glimpses of his own home. His parlour, complete with hat and clothes rack in 1931 and solving a puzzle for some commentators, his wife nursing a baby and child. Followed by an unusual painting of Boats on the Danube. |

The Freemanart Consultancy have been advising and serving both private and corporate clients around the world continuously for over 45 years, with authentication and the legitimacy of works of art. We specialize in conducting, managing and directing, fully international academic and forensic investigations into the authenticity and validity of art works for clients from all walks of life. Undertaking complex attribution assignments, investigating and researching previously unknown or anonymous artists oeuvres. A fully internationally operational fine art consultancy, we uniquely specialize in fine art authentication investigation issues and implement the many complex procedures and applications that are required in that process. These are always diverse activities and ones which have fallen neatly into clearly defined professional responsibilities, multiple actions and formalities. |
|
Authentication: Investigation and research, with a view to establishing a full, internationally accepted, well proven and correctly underpinned certification of a work of art. This would include those works which may have a specific signatorial claim, or those with an earlier expert qualification of legitimacy, or those that currently have none. This requires dedicated, detailed international academic and archival research and a variety of forensic applications, in a well planned and thorough in depth investigation. Attribution: Identifying and confirming the identity of a previously anonymous artist, studio or workshop from which a work of art probably first originated. One which may not have been previously known, or formerly identified beforehand. Revision: Re examining and investigating an erstwhile, previously ascribed historical artist attribution which is possibly incorrect, or one that has been formally challenged. Confirmation: Conducting the multilingual archival research required in investigating and confirming the provenance, lineage and prior history of ownership of a work of art internationally. Scrutiny: Identifying premeditated fakes and forgeries, determining those which may be studio or later student copies, or previously misrepresented or wrongful attributions. Prosecution: Investigating an alleged art fraud and forgery issue and assisting and advising those litigating or prosecuting the fact. Attention: Conducting all fine art related due diligence and duty of care enquiries, the prepurchase or sale related studies and advising clients in matters of consolidating safe and secure future family distribution.
Simply put, we are here to help in all fine art related matters. |
