Authenticating  the drawings and paintings of  Edgar  Degas

 

 

 Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas was a French painter who is often regarded as the true founder of the Impressionist movement.

 When thinking of Edgar Degas, you would automatically associate him with the ballet  & dancers, soft portraits drawn in pastel, women at their toilette, images of laundry workers , cabaret singers and racecourse scenes.

 His work epitomises life in Paris where he was born and where he spent his life. But the majority of fake works on the open market are undoubtedly based upon his ballet drawings and paintings.

Sadly, we see many examples of fake Degas art each year.

 

 

 

 

  Tom Keating, the cheeky English art faker made dozens and dozens of fake pastel drawings and paintings in his career which he signed Degas. Like the one illustrated to the left .

 The majority of fake Degas paintings and in particular his pastel studies are relatively new drawings and compositions which are based on single elements taken from within an already authenticated major art work. Perhaps just one figure plucked from it. As in the drawings to the right above.

It is designed to make the purchaser believe it is a study made prior to the major work being accomplished.

In fact, it's the other way around.
