Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec

(1864–1901)

  Son and heir of Comte Alphonse - Charles de Toulouse, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born on November the 24, 1864 in the South of France.    Lautrec was the last in the line of an aristocratic family that dated back over a thousand years. Today the Lautrec family estate houses the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec.

 As a child, Henri was weak and sickly, but by the time he was ten years old he had begun to draw and paint with an astonishing ability. At the age of twelve Toulouse-Lautrec broke his left leg and at fourteen his right leg. The bones never healed properly and his legs ceased to grow. He reached maturity with a body trunk of normal size but with abnormally short legs. He was only 4 1/2 feet tall. Deprived of the physical life that a normal body would have permitted, Toulouse-Lautrec lived completely for his art.

 He lived in the Montmartre district of Paris, the center of the cabaret entertainment and bohemian life that he loved to depict in his work. Dance halls and nightclubs, racetracks, ladies of the night - all these were memorialized on canvas or made into lithographs.

 Toulouse-Lautrec was very much an active part of this community, where often he would sit at a crowded nightclub table, laughing and drinking, meanwhile making swift sketches of those around him. Then when back in his studio, he would expand the sketches into brightly coloured paintings.

 In order to join in the Montmartre life - as well as to fortify himself against the crowd's ridicule of his appearance - Toulouse-Lautrec began to drink heavily, but by the 1890s the drinking was affecting his health and he was confined first to a sanatorium and then to his mother's care at home. Sadly, he could not stay away from alcohol and Toulouse-Lautrec died on September 9th, 1901, at the family chateau of Malrome.

  In recent years a growing number of works bearing the name Toulouse Lautrec have been placed in major auctions around the world and as the values of works of art by him consistently climbs higher, there has been a greater demand for the absolute confirmation of legitimacy. So it would follow, that any works of art that do surface from the mists of time will require both a comprehensive and thorough investigation of their backgrounds. With similar scrutiny made to confirm that any previously given attribution is correct and that a description of a work of art that is seemingly by Toulouse - Lautrec can truly be relied upon.

 The duration and the direction of any authenticity investigation or an attribution of a work of art will inevitably vary from project to project. But there are clear and very well defined professional formalities, responsibilities and areas of scrutiny that we can formally assist you with, including:

• Authentication: Authentification:   Conducting comprehensive investigations and in depth research into a work of art with a view to establishing a correct, complete and formally recognized certification. One absolutely upheld by the appropriate, legally acknowledged and internationally sanctioned authority, body or expert on that given artist. Directing detailed and complicated inquiries, with multilingual capability, including any international academic research and forensic applications that are required.
  

•  Attribution: Identifying and confirming the identity of a previously anonymous artist, studio or workshop from which a work of art most likely originated. Including the re-examination and investigation of a previous attribution which may be incorrect, or the scrutiny of an attribution that has been formally questioned or is currently doubted.
  

•  Confirmation:  Undertaking research and investigations into the legitimacy of the provenance, history and prior ownership of a work of art and establishing its accuracy and legitimacy.
  
  

•  Scrutiny: Examen minutieux:Identifying fake or faux works of art and forgeries, including any false supportive accompanying documentation and determining works of art which may be studio or later copies, or previously given incorrect attributions.

ABOUT A WORK OF ART DESCRIPTOR AND ITS TERMINOLOGY

  *It is important to very clearly understand the auction terms that are used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be created in the manner of the artist, or those which could be variants of the artists works of art that bear a signature or monogram. In this case as if they were defining the creations of the British artist Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec (1864–1901).

•  Where the name, Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec (1864–1901) is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually cited as Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec (1864–1901), including his dates, then in their qualified and professional opinion they are in no doubt. It is a genuine and authentic item and one painted by that artist. This is usually fully qualified by its inclusion in any catalogue raissone, or by the guarantee of the opinion given by the appropriate and internationally recognized expert authority on the artist.

•  When Attributed to Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec (1864–1901) is used, or it is similarly defined as 'ascribed to' or 'Attrib. to ' [abbreviated,] or Attribué à, or ascribed to, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But... there is no guarantee. It is only an opinion.

•  But if the term Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec - circle of, or “Circle of Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec ” is specifically used, then in their opinion, it is a work only of the period of the artist, but showing their influence. Or by someone closely associated with the artist, BUT not necessarily by their pupil or student.

•  When the name is given thus; Painted in the “Style of Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec ” or “Follower of Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work of art executed only in the artist’s way, their 'style', but not necessarily by a pupil. Yet it may be a contemporary, or nearly a contemporary of the artist.

•  If the phrase in the “Manner of Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec is used or is defined….” then in their opinion it is also only a work painted in the style of the artist, but of a later date and definitely not by the artist as named.

•  When the term “After….Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec "; is the term used, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original work of art either by the artist or another artist/ printmaker.

•  Signed - Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec ; “Dated….” or “Inscribed Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec ” Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark ? however, indicates a strong element of doubt.

•  When the term 'bears signature', is used or the name, Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec is specified followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature of Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec /date/or inscription” Then in 'their opinion,' either the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
