Investigating the Authenticity and Attributions of Paintings believed to be by
Thomas Sidney Cooper. CVO, R.A.
(British, 1803–1902)
T.S.Cooper who was to become one of the greatest and successful painters of animals in the British countryside during the Victorian era, was born in Canterbury in Kent in England in 1803. With no formal training, save as a 12 year old working in a coach builders yard, he first entered the Royal Academy Schools before going to Belgium in 1829 to take up a teaching career and marrying. It was here he became friends with the great Belgian animal painter Eugène Verboeckhoven and it was he who was to have a dramatic influence upon his art. Sheep and cattle were the most prominent themes in Cooper's paintings, set in fields, landscapes, barns, farms and depicted in all seasons and he enjoyed great success in his lucrative career with an endless string of patrons ready to commission his work. Becoming a wealthy man, he was a great philanthropist in his birth place of Canterbury, using some of his wealth to distribute bread and coal to the poor each Christmas. Thomas Sidney Cooper exhibited at both the British Institution and the Royal academy during a prolific life on numerous occasions. So prolific in fact that at his studio sale conducted by Christies in 1902 after his death, the sale lasted a full three days !
An 'Intercepted Raid, Ettrick Shepherd' by THOMAS SIDNEY COOPER, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1842, an oil on canvas, SOLD at Sothebys' for £37,500 GBP making it at that time, the most valuable works to be sold at auction. Surpassed only by Christies with a Bull and Cows in a Landscape making GBP £51,650.00 But most notably at Christie’s in 2003, a scene of sheep exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1875 sold for a T S Cooper auction-record £150,000 in a sale of Victorian pictures from The Forbes collection. So there is vast potential profit for those inclined to peddle fakes and forgeries. Typical works by T. S. Cooper which are effected in both oils and watercolours, fetch the low to middle thousands of pounds at auction today and it is not at all surprising that unscrupulous dealers and sellers alike, take old paintings of similar subjects with their own sheep and cows set in British landscapes, particularly unsigned works and add a signature to increase both its appeal and value. This is the most common sort of fake we see, the adding of signatures and is still a criminal offence, art fraud. Another favourite trick is to take an existing known legitimate work by Thomas Sidney Cooper and copy elements of it as a drawing, usually one made on appropriately old paper, easily obtained from the front of an old book of the time. Add some notes and inscriptions, an initial or signature and claim that is is a preparatory study for that painting !
