George Morland

British

 George Morland was a firstly a British painter of portraits, but also became better known for his genre and multiple figure subjects usually depicted in a rustic manner. However, Morland is mainly associated with small scenes of middle and working class English rural and sporting life, usually based more on the tavern and the stable than the cottage interior. Interestingly his own account of his life tells us he was also a also an art dealer, a forger and a restorer!

Morland produced a huge number of paintings in his life and those paintings and subject choices became extremely popular and thus he was much imitated, copied and more so forged, even in his own life time.

 The disparity of works attributed to George Morland in the marketplace, measured in both in quality and by name is marked and does not always reflect the quality differentials that he produced. However that can be partially due to the fact that he was often drunk, in hiding from his creditors, or in prison. The debauched view of his lifestyle being an attribute he welcomed and encouraged as it outrages the art world and increased his popularity in a strange way.

 But today, virtually anything painted in the style of the artist is easily passed of as legitimate when a signature has been added to an otherwise anonymous work, or when the original signature has been deleted. However, there are many a contemporary copy of works by him to identify

 Confirmation:  Undertaking research and investigations into the legitimacy of the provenance, history and prior ownership of a work of art and establishing its own accuracy.

 Prosecution:  Investigating alleged art fraud and forgery and assisting and advising those who are , or may be considering litigating or prosecuting the fact. This includes legal professionals and private clients.

 Attention:  Conducting all fine art related due diligence and duty of care inquiries. Including safe prepurchase or sale related audits and assisting clients in consolidating a well balanced future family distribution.

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS.

 It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even stylized would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature.

In this case George Morland.

If - George Morland, Is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, then in their opinion it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself.

But if George Morland; Is described as “Attributed to George Morland….” Then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But no guarantee. It's an opinion.

George Morland ; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of” or "atelier"  Means in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio or workshop of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or a pupil under the principal artists supervision.

But if the term George Morland or “Circle of George Morland” is used, then in their opinion, it is a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence, or closely associated with the artist BUT not necessarily by his pupil or student.

George Morland ; In the “Style of ….” or “Follower of George Morland”  Means that in their opinion it is a work of art executed only in the artist’s style, but not necessarily by a pupil. But it may be contemporary, or nearly contemporary.

George Morland ; “Manner of ….” In their opinion it's a work painted in the style of the artist but of a later date and definitely not by the artist.

George Morland ; “After ….” In their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist.

George Morland; “Signed…”, “Dated….” or “Inscribed” In their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark indicates an element of doubt.

George Morland followed by the words; "With signature ….”, “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature George Morland /date/inscription” Then in their opinion, the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
