 Henri Martin was an artist trained in Toulouse where he was born and later in Jean-Paul Laurens's workshop at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was to become a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He is well known for his sea views of Brittany and particularly Collioure, a port and village on the Mediterranean coast of southern France where he once lived. Painting in his early career murals, biblical and allegorical scenes, Henri Martin moved on to painting florals, portraits, landscapes and rural and coastal scenes in both a pointillist and impressionist style, focussing on vivid colour and dramatic light effects.

Henri Martin was one of the most admired of all French post-impressionist artists, compared to and regarded as an artist with all the sensitivity of Monet.

 But today, virtually anything painted in the style of the artist is easily passed off as a legitimate work or study when a Henri Martin signature has been added to an otherwise anonymous work. Or more commonly when the original signature has been cleaned off and deleted. However, there are many contemporary copies of original works by him to also identify and rule out as authentic.

  Though both the duration and direction of any attribution or authenticity investigation will naturally vary from project to project, there are well defined responsibilities, areas of scrutiny and professional formalities that we can assist you with including:

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS.

 It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even stylized would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram.

In this case Henri Jean Guillaume Martin.

If - Henri Jean Guillaume Martin, Is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, then in their opinion it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself.

But if Henri Martin; Is described as “Attributed to Henri Martin….” Then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But no guarantee. It's only an opinion.

Henri Jean Guillaume Martin ; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of” or "atelier"  Means in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or a pupil under the principal artists supervision.

But if the term Henri Jean Guillaume Martin “Circle of Henri Martin” is used, then in their opinion, it is a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence, or closely associated with the artist BUT not necessarily by his pupil or student.

Henri Martin; In the “Style of ….” or “Follower of Henri Martin”  Means that in their opinion it is a work of art executed only in the artist’s style, but not necessarily by a pupil. But it may be contemporary, or nearly contemporary.

Henri Martin;in the “Manner of ….” In their opinion it's a work painted in the style of the artist but of a later date and definitely not by the artist.

Henri Jean Guillaume Martin; “After then ….” In their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist.

Henri Martin; “Signed…”, “Dated….” or “Inscribed” In their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark indicates an element of doubt.

Henri Martin followed by the words; "With signature ….”, “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature Henri Martin/date/inscription” Then in their opinion, the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
