Investigating the Authenticity and Attribution of Paintings and Drawings believed to be by or Attributed to; Henri-Edmond-Joseph Delacroix
(1856-1910) AKA: Henri Edmond Cross Attelier stamp HEC French Painter, Watercolourist, Lithographer
Henri Edmond Cross (born Henri Edmond Delacroix) was born on 20th May 1856 in Douai, a commune in the Nord département in northern France. In about 1876, he began studying law in Lille and simultaneously attended the art academy there. Two years on, he moved to Paris and devoted himself to painting in the studio of François Bonvin the realist artist. Henri Cross thereafter regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon. His early works were characterized by his use of dark, heavy colours, which became brighter under the influence of Claude Monet and Georges Seurat. In 1884, Cross founded the "Salon des Indépendants" together with Paul Signac and Georges Seurat. Around 1890, Henri Edmond Cross’ painting became distinguished by his use of the Neo-impressionist Pointillist style. His landscapes, nudes and portraits hold typically generous brush strokes and bright, clear colours. It is true to say that Henri Edmond Cross was one of the foremost representatives of French Pointillism. Worthy of note is that his later works show a significantly softer brush stroke. Today, virtually anything painted in the pointillist style of the artist, can try to be passed off as a legitimate work or study when a Henri Cross signature has been added to an otherwise anonymous work. An applied studio stamp, bearing the initials HEC of the artist, especially on works on paper can be convincing to the drawings and pastels of 'type' he produced. There are also contemporary copies of original works by him to identify and rule out as authentic.

Fine Art Authentication |
Though both the duration and direction of any attribution or authenticity investigation will naturally vary from project to project, there are well defined responsibilities, areas of scrutiny and professional formalities that we can assist you with including:
Authentication: Conducting and directing comprehensive investigations and in depth research, with a view to establishing a correct, full and formally recognized certification of a work of art. One absolutely upheld by the appropriate, legally acknowledged and internationally sanctioned authority, body or expert on that given artist. Directing
detailed and complicated inquiries with multilingual, international academic research and any
forensic applications.
Attribution: Identifying and confirming
the identity of a previously anonymous artist, studio or workshop from which a
work of art most likely originated. Including the re-examination and investigation of a
previous attribution which may be incorrect, or the scrutiny of an attribution
that has been formally questioned or doubted.
Confirmation: Undertaking research and investigations into the legitimacy of the provenance, history and prior ownership of a work of art and establishing its own accuracy.
Scrutiny: Identifying fake works of art
and forgeries, including any false supportive accompanying documentation and
determining works of art which may be studio or later copies, or previous incorrect
attributions. Prosecution: Investigating alleged art fraud and forgery and assisting and advising those who
are , or may be considering litigating or prosecuting the fact. This includes
legal professionals and private clients. Attention: Conducting all fine art related due diligence and duty of care inquiries. Including safe prepurchase or sale related audits and assisting clients in consolidating a well balanced future family distribution.
Appraisal: Valuations, quality and condition reports.

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS and TERMINOLOGY
It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even stylized would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case Henri-Edmond-Joseph Delacroix
If Henri-Edmond-Joseph Delacroix or Henri Edmond Cross or Henry Cross, is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, then in their opinion it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself. But if Henri-Edmond-Joseph Delacroix; is described as “Attributed to Henri Cross….” Then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But no guarantee. It's only an opinion. Henri Edmond Cross; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of” or "atelier" Means in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or a pupil under the principal artists supervision. But if the term Henri Edmond Cross “Circle of Henri Cross” is used, then in their opinion, it is a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence, or closely associated with the artist BUT not necessarily by his pupil or student. Henri Cross; In the “Style of ….” or “Follower of Henri Cross” Means that in their opinion it is a work of art executed only in the artist’s style, but not necessarily by a pupil. But it may be contemporary, or nearly contemporary. Henri Cross;in the “Manner of ….” In their opinion it's a work painted in the style of the artist but of a later date and definitely not by the artist. Henri Cross; “After then ….” In their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. Henri Cross; “Signed…”, “Dated….” or “Inscribed” In their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark indicates an element of doubt. Henri Cross followed by the words; "With signature ….”, “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature Henri Cross/date/inscription” Then in their opinion, the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
We can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters.
