Investigating the Authenticity of Paintings and Drawings believed to be by or Attributed to;

Edward Brian Seago RWS

1910-1974

 Largely a self taught artist, Seago was a painter in oil and water-colour of landscapes, street scenes, portraits and animals.

 A biography of his life is unnecessary here and has been fully documented and well covered by other specialised commentators.

 However he is often quite poorly emulated, most likely due to the vastly increasing values of his works and sadly variations of his

paintings are often faked. Yet there may be works that were either lost, mislaid, or have been with families for eons that have never surfaced and are yet to be documented. But today, it has to be said, some of the Seago works that do appear of the open market are either misattributed to his hand, either mistakenly or more commonly, deliberately.

 Simply with the inclusion of a copied signature or a monogram, placed on a work of art of a similar type, style, or subject matter to his own paintings, or one applied to a previously unsigned or lesser work, even a student of the arts emulated effort, (where an original signature has been deleted,) it is no wonder that question marks can and do so often arise about the authenticity of some Edward Seago paintings.

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND TERMINOLOGY

  It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case the paintings and drawings of Edward Brian Seago .

 Where the name Edward Brian Seago given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually John Brett, then in their professional opinion it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself, Edward Seago .

 Attributed to Edward Brian Seago, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But there is no guarantee. It's only an opinion.

 When Edward Seago ; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of Edward Seago "atelier" is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or even a pupil under the principal artists supervision.

 But if the term Edward Seago , or “Circle of Edward Seago ” is used, then in their opinion, it is a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence, or closely associated with the artist, BUT not necessarily by his pupil or student.
