Investigating the Authenticity of Paintings and Drawings believed to be by or Attributed to; Sir William Russell Flint RA. P.R.W.S., ROI
Scottish artist, watercolourist and illustrator 1880–1969
Sir William Russell Flint, the son of F. Wighton Flint, a Scottish lithographer, is regarded as probably the finest watercolourist of his era in Britain. Scottish landscapes are naturally abundant, though he distanced himself from England, favouring the Mediterranean climes and regions. Provence and Normandy however featured strongly in his choice of places to paint in France reflecting the local culture and customs there. However, the exquisite works he brought back from trips to France, Spain and Italy are what he is famed for. Particularly the erotic female figure, often depicted in subtle and muted tones, which is a resounding and repeated feature of his works which began with his focus first on Spanish dancers. A commercial illustrator for the Illustrated London News and many books, such as Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and the Odyssey, William Russell Flint enjoyed great commercial success as an artist, though was never given critical acclaim at the time. Elected as a Royal Academician in 1933, Flint became President of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1936 and was knighted by King George VI in 1947.
Often quite poorly imitated and that attempt at imitation is undoubtedly due to the vastly increasing values of his works of art in recent years. Yet sadly, variations of paintings claiming to he his, either deliberately faked or simply misrepresented and misattributed to his hand, be that mistakenly or more commonly, deliberately, do appear. It may be true to say that there could be works of his that were either lost, mislaid, or have been with families for a that have never surfaced to date, which are yet to be documented. But it has to be said, some of the William Russell Flint works that do appear on the open market need investigating to be certain of their creation. Falsified works, can be by the inclusion of a copied signature or a simple monogram, placed on a work of art of a similar early type, style, or subject matter to Russell Flints' paintings. Or one applied to a previously unsigned or lesser work. Even a student of the arts emulated effort, where an original signature has been deleted. It is no wonder that question marks can and do, arise about the authenticity of some William Russell Flint paintings.
We are international fine art consultants, specialising in conducting full investigations into the authenticity of works of art created by artists in all categories, all regions and from historical eras, alongside scrutinizing their provenance. Confidentially serving both private individuals and corporate clients from around the world for over 45 years, we can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters, particularly issues of authenticity, legitimacy and the attribution of old and modern master works of art. Including the fine works of William Russell Flint, his circle, or any paintings or works of art that you are unsure about. Some examples of W R. Flints' works and those signed with that name, appear below. No inference or question is made as to their authenticity, moreover they are a representational view of the types of works offered for sale at auction internationally that need to be understood and sometimes qualified. |

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND TERMINOLOGY Sir William Russell Flint RA. ROI
It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case the paintings and drawings of Sir William Russell Flint.
Where the name, William Russell Flint or W. Russell Flint is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually John Brett, then in their professional opinion it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself, William Russell Flint. When Attributed to William Russell Flint is used, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But there is no guarantee. It's only an opinion. When William Russell Flint; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of William Russell Flint "atelier" is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or even a pupil under the principal artists supervision. But if the term Sir William Russell Flint, or “Circle of Sir William Russell Flint” is used, then in their opinion, it is a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence, or closely associated with the artist, BUT not necessarily by his pupil or student. When the name William Russell Flint is given; or Painted in the “Style of William Russell Flint” or “Follower of William Russell Flint is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work of art executed only in the artist’s 'style', but not necessarily by a pupil. But it may be contemporary, or nearly contemporary of the artist. If the phrase in the “Manner of William Russell Flint, is used it is defined….” Then in their opinion it's a work painted in the style of the artist but of a later date and definitely not by the artist himself. When the term “After….” William Russell Flint; is the term, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original.. William Russell Flint; “Signed…”, “Dated….” or “Inscribed William Russell Flint” Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark however, indicates a strong element of doubt. When the term William Russell Flint
is used followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature William Russell Flint /date/or inscription” Then in their opinion, the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
We can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters.
