Investigating the Authenticity of Paintings and Drawings believed to be by or Attributed to; Suzanne Valadon 1865 - 1938 French Symbolist and Post-Impressionist Artist
Suzanne Valadon was an eccentric live-wire who personified and was idealized on the canvases of Pierre-Auguste Renoir and even Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec accurately captured her mockingly cynical side. But, as if to prove a hard earned point, she also later became a boundary breaking artist in her own right. Born Marie-Clémentine Valadon in the village of Bessines-sur-Gartempe, Haute-Vienne in 1865, she was the daughter of an unmarried femme de blanchisserie and together the pair arrived in Paris and settled in Montmartre. By the age of nine, she had taught herself to draw, and at 15, became an artists model herself, but had grown up in poverty. Valadon began painting in earnest, full-time in 1896, concentrating on vibrant still lifes, flower subjects, portraits and landscapes. With Edgar Degas as her biggest supporter, Valadon’s confidence grew and he persuaded her to exhibit at the prestigious Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where she became the first woman artist to be admitted to the exhibition. The rest of her life story is history and is very well covered and documented elsewhere, so a biography is hardly necessary here. However, today,she is often poorly imitated, most likely due to the vastly increasing values of her works of art and sadly variations of her paintings are often faked. It's probably true to say that there may indeed be works that were either lost, mislaid, or have been with families for eons that have never surfaced to date and are yet to be discovered and documented. But it has to be said, some of the Susan Valladon works that do appear of the open market are either misattributed to her hand, mistakenly or more commonly, deliberately. Falsified works, simply with the inclusion of a copied signature or a monogram, placed on a work of art of a similar type, style, or subject matter to her own paintings, or one applied to a previously unsigned or lesser work. Even a student of the arts emulated effort, (where an original signature has been deleted,) is no wonder that question marks can and do so often arise about the authenticity of some Suzanne Valadon paintings. We are international fine art consultants, specializing in conducting full investigations into the authenticity of works of art created by artists in all categories, all regions and from historical eras, alongside scrutinizing their provenance. Confidentially serving both private individuals and corporate clients from around the world for over 45 years, we can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters, particularly issues of authenticity, legitimacy and the attribution of old and modern master works of art. Including the fine works of Suzanne Valadon , her circle, or any paintings or works of art that you are unsure about. ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND TERMINOLOGY Suzanne Valadon;
It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case the paintings and drawings of Suzanne Valadon.
Where the name Suzanne Valadon given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually John Brett, then in their professional opinion it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself, Suzanne Valadon. Attributed to Suzanne Valadon, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But there is no guarantee. It's only an opinion. When Suzanne Valadon; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of Suzanne Valadon "attelier" is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or even a pupil under the principal artists supervision. But if the term Suzanne Valadon, or “Circle of Suzanne Valadon ” is used, then in their own opinion, it is a work of the period of the artist and showing their influence, or closely associated with the artist, BUT not necessarily by a pupil or student. When the name Suzanne Valadon is given; or Painted in the “Style of Suzanne Valadon” or “a Follower of Suzanne Valadon is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work of art executed only in the artist’s 'style', but not necessarily by a pupil. But it may be contemporary, or nearly a contemporary of the artist. If the phrase in the “Manner of Suzanne Valadon , is used it is defined….” Then in their opinion it's a work painted in the style of the artist but of a later date and definitely not by the artist himself. When the term After Suzanne Valado ; is the term used, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by this artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original though. “Signed…”, “Dated….” or “Inscribed” Suzanne Valadon;Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark however, indicates a strong element of doubt. When the term Suzanne Valadon
is used followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature of Suzanne Valadon /date/inscription” Then in their opinion, the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
We can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters.
