Anglo-French painter.

1887-1979

   Paul Maze, known as the last of the great post impressionists, created works in oils, watercolours and often in pastels with his subjects including French maritime scenes, New York City scenes and the English countryside, where themes such as boating regattas, sporting events and ceremonial celebrations, including Henley Regatta, Goodwood racing,Trooping the Colour and yachting at Cowes are common.

 Quite poorly imitated, the often attempted imitation is undoubtedly due to the vastly increasing values of his works of art in recent years. With variations of paintings claiming to be his, either deliberately faked or simply misrepresented and misattributed to his hand, be that mistakenly or more commonly, deliberately, appearing.

 It could well be true that there are works of his that were either lost, mislaid, or have been with families for eons that have never surfaced to date and are yet to be documented. But it must be said, some of the Paul Maze works that do appear on the open market need investigating to be certain of their legitimacy.

 Falsified works, by the inclusion of a copied signature or that simple monogram, placed on a work of art of a similar early type, style, or subject matter to Mazes' paintings. Or one applied to a previously unsigned or lesser work, such as a student of the arts emulated effort, where an original signature has been deleted. It is no wonder that question marks can and do, arise about the authenticity of some paintings.

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND TERMINOLOGY

Paul Lucien Maze

  It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case the paintings and drawings of Paul Lucien Maze.

 Where the name, Paul Lucien Maze or Paul Maze is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually Paul Maze, then in their professional opinion it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself, Paul Lucien Maze.

 When Attributed to Paul Lucien Maze is used, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But there is no guarantee. It's only an opinion.

 When Paul Lucien Maze; “Studio of ….” or “Workshop of Paul Lucien Maze "atelier" is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or even a pupil under the principal artists supervision.
