Horatio Henry Couldery

British Animal painter - cats, kittens and dogs.

 Horatio Henry Couldery was a British animal painter who excelled in his portrayal of cats, kittens and dogs. Trained at the Royal Academy Schools , he exhibited at the RA between 1861 and 1892, as well as at the British Institution and Suffolk Street.

 There is obviously no necessity for a full biography of the life of Horatio Henry Couldery here, as it has been documented extremely well by others, excepting that inevitably, he was imitated. As any attempt at imitation is clearly an attempt at deception, particularly when the work bears a signature, due to the vastly increasing values of his works of art in recent years and the quantity of works of art he produced in his lifetime, today, all manner of paintings claiming to be his, either deliberately faked, or more commonly, misrepresented or simply misattributed to this hand, some, many years ago, be that mistakenly attributed or deliberately, they do appear on the open art market.

 It may well be true that there are some works that were either lost, mislaid, or have been with families across the world for aeons and have never surfaced, still yet to be documented. But it must be said, some of theHoratio Henry Couldery works that do appear on the open market will need seriously investigating to be absolutely certain of both their legitimacy or a previously given attribution.

 Falsified works can be effected simply by the inclusion of a copied signature or a monogram placed on a work of art that is just a similar or early type, style, or the subject matter to that of Couldery. A previous signature which has been deleted from an old painting with a new one added is common. It is no wonder that question marks can and sometimes do arise about the authenticity of some of his paintings and confusion as to whether they were just from his studio, or from his circle.

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND TERMINOLOGY

  It is important to understand the auction terms used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the style or manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which happen to bear a signature or monogram. In this case the paintings and drawings of Horatio Henry Couldery .

 Were the name, Horatio Henry Couldery is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually as Horatio Henry Couldery, then in their professional opinion they are in no doubt, it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself.

When Attributed to Horatio Henry Couldery, or Horatio Henry Couldery is similarly written or used as ascribed to, or Attrib, when abbreviated, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But... there is no guarantee. It's only an opinion.
