Investigating the Authenticity of Paintings and works of art believed to be by or Attributed to
(1829–1915) British Norwich still-life painter
Eloise Harriet Stannard became an exceptionally prominent painter of fruit and flower still life subjects in the Victorian era. Following on in the rather predictable footsteps of her very famous artist aunt, Emily Stannard, who was considered to be the finest British female still life artist of the nineteenth century. Eloise came from a distinguished dynasty of Norfolk artists. One of fourteen, she was the daughter of Alfred Stannard one of the better painters of the Norfolk landscape and the sister of Alfred George Stannard, who were both successful exhibiting painters of the Norwich school, the first provincial art movement in Britain. Eloises' paintings are still sometimes confused with those of Emily, who painted meticulous fruit and flower pieces in a traditional Dutch style. Unable to paint landscapes due to a heart ailment that kept her indoors, Eloise naturally took to the more easily accessible subjects and was known to borrow all her ornaments and props from families local to her. Of her paintings, near all are oils and are characteristically luminous, to a tee, meticulously painted, highly detailed with sparkling colours and appearing as if her arrangement were set in bright sunlight. They verge upon the extravagant, are sumptuous and exotic. Widely acclaimed she sold well and unlike so many other female artists of her time, was so successful that she never had to take in students to teach drawing and painting to. Her painting career nearly came to an end however at the death of her mother and herself only in her twenties, when she inherited the responsibility of a large family and could not produce as much work as she had, though she continued to paint until late in life, remaining a spinster. During her life, Eloise Stannard exhibited still-lives at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists
Adding a signature to a painting either by deletion of a previous one, or the addition of one to a previously unsigned work, is a common place fraud and clearly any attempt at such imitation is clearly a form of criminal deception. Today, paintings are deliberately faked, or more commonly, they can be misrepresented or simply misattributed to a particular hand. That of course can be either be a mistake or intentional and have been effected at any time in the present or the past.

Confirmation: Undertaking research and investigations into the legitimacy of the provenance, history and prior ownership of a work of art and establishing its accuracy and legitimacy.
Scrutiny: Examen minutieux:Identifying fake or faux works of art

attributions. Prosecution: Poursuite: Investigating alleged art fraud and forgery and assisting and advising those who
are currently , or may be considering litigating or prosecuting the fact. This includes
colleagues who are legal professionals and individual private clients. Attention: Conducting all fine art related due diligence and duty of care inquiries. Including safe prepurchase or sale related audits and assisting clients in consolidating a well balanced future family distribution.

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND AUCTION TERMINOLOGY Eloise Harriet Stannard
It is important to clearly understand auction terms that are used in any published descriptor, in order to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the manner of an artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of her works which bear a signature or monogram. In this case if they were defining the paintings and drawings of the British artist Eloise Harriet Stannard:
Where the name, Eloise Harriet Stannard is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually cited as Eloise Harriet Stannard, then in their qualified and professional opinion they are in no doubt, it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist herself. When Attributed to Eloise Harriet Stannard, or it is similarly written or used as ascribed to or Attrib, [abbreviated,] or ascribed to, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But... there is no guarantee. It is only an opinion. When Eloise Harriet Stannard; with the term “School of, or Studio of ….” or “Workshop of Eloise Harriet Stannard" or atelier of Eloise Harriet Stannard " is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist. Possibly by an apprentice or a pupil under the principal artists supervision and guidance. But if the term Eloise Harriet Stannard circle of, or “Circle of Eloise Harriet Stannard” is specifically used, then in their opinion, it is a work only of the period of the artist, but showing their influence, or someone closely associated with the artist, BUT not necessarily by a pupil or student. When the name is given thus; Painted in the “Style of Eloise Harriet Stannard ” or “Follower of Eloise Harriet Stannard is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work of art executed only in the artist’s way, her 'style', but not necessarily by a pupil. Yet it may be a contemporary, or nearly a contemporary of the artist. If the phrase in the “Manner of Eloise Harriet Stannard is used or is defined….” then in their opinion it is also only a work painted in the style of the artist, but of a later date and definitely not by the artist herself. When the term “After….Eloise Harriet Stannard "; is the term used, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original work of art either by the artist, or another artist/ printmaker. Signed - Eloise Harriet Stannard ; “Dated….” or “Inscribed Eloise Harriet Stannard ” Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark ? however, indicates a strong element of doubt. When the term 'bears signature',
is used or the name, Eloise Harriet Stannard is specified followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature of Eloise Harriet Stannard /date/or inscription” Then in 'their opinion,' the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
We can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters.
