 Works of his compositionally intricate calibre and quality are rarely if ever faked, copied more likely. Though certainly the more impressionist works can be and are and simply by adding a signature, monogram, or a persuasive inscription or gallery label to a previously anonymous work, this is a common place fraud.

With such imitation aimed clearly an attempted criminal deception, that kind of addition is usually to a previously unsigned or marked work of the same type or manner of the artist it is claiming to be by, even earlier studies and preparatory drawings, and more early student type works claiming to be made in a much earlier time in the artists life.

 Paintings however are sometimes deliberately misrepresented, sometimes just misjudged and misattributed to a particular hand. That of course can be either be an honest mistake, or an intentional ploy and it also can have been effected at any time, either in the present or indeed the past.

 Some of the believed to be Walter Ernest Webster works that do surface, will need a far deeper investigation of their authenticity to be absolutely certain of both legitimacy, or that a previously given attribution is indeed correct.

The provenance and history associated with a work of art also  must ne scrutinized to determine if it is valid and sound. Or that any description of a work of art claiming to be by him is correct and can truly be relied upon.

ABOUT PAINTING DESCRIPTORS AND AUCTION TERMINOLOGY

  It is important to clearly understand auction terms that are used in any published descriptor, in order to be cautious of works that may just be painted in the manner of the artist, or even the stylized - would be copies of his works which bear a signature or monogram.

In this case if they were defining the paintings and drawings of the British artist Walter Ernest Webster.

 Where the name, Walter Ernest Webster is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually cited as Walter Ernest Webster, then in their qualified and professional opinion they are in no doubt, it is the genuine and authentic item, one painted by the artist himself.

 When Attributed to Walter Ernest Webster, or it is similarly written or used as ascribed to or Attrib, [abbreviated,] or ascribed to, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But... there is no guarantee. It is only an opinion.

 When Walter Ernest Webster; with the term “School of, or Studio of ….” or “Workshop of Walter Ernest Webster" or atelier of Walter Ernest Webster " is used, this means that in their opinion it is a work executed in the studio of the artist.  If the phrase in the “Manner of Walter Ernest Webster is used or is defined….” then in their opinion it is also only a work painted in the style of the artist, but of a later date and definitely not by the artist himself.

 When the term “After….Walter Ernest Webster "; is the term used, then in their opinion it is a copy (made at any date) of an authentic and original work by the artist. This also applies to prints made 'after' an original work of art either by the artist himself or another artist/ printmaker..

 Signed - Walter Ernest Webster ; “Dated….” or “Inscribed Walter Ernest Webster ” Then in their opinion the work has been signed/dated/or inscribed by that specific artist. The addition of a question mark ? however, indicates a strong element of doubt.

 When the term 'bears signature', is used or the name, Walter Ernest Webster is specified followed by the words; "With signature ….”, or “With date ….” or “With inscription….” or “Bears signature of Walter Ernest Webster /date/or inscription” Then in 'their opinion,' the signature / date / or inscription is spurious, forged or has been added by someone else other than the artist.
