 Sassoferato's genius lay in capturing a magical vision of the Madonna as he saw her, with purity. With such exquisite beauty and devotion that it set him completely apart from any other contemporaries. A pupil of Domenichino and true believer and keeper of the Renaissance tradition, in particular that of of Raphael, perfection was his.

The same face and set of models appears with little variation or apology in the major part of his output and was to be imitated time and time again by both himself, his studio and by successive generations of painters. Think of the huge public demand for devotional focus in the home of both the elite and the poor.

 In recent years an increasing number of important works aligned to his name and certainly that of his studio, have been sold at auctions across the world at not surprisingly exceptionally high prices. So as the values of works of art created by him continue to escalate, there is also a greater need for caution and for confirmation of their legitimacy, if only to establish the correctness of a previously given attribution, or that a given descriptor of one being offered for sale is sound.

ABOUT A WORK OF ART DESCRIPTOR AND TERMINOLOGY

  *It is important to very clearly understand the auction terms that are commonly used in any published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be created in the manner of the artist, or those which could be variants of the artists works of art that bear a signature or monogram. In this case as if they were defining the creations of the Italian artist Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Sassoferrato (Sassoferrato 1609-1685 Rome) and his studio.

•  Where the name, Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Sassoferrato is given with the first name/s and surname of the artist, usually cited as Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Sassoferrato, including his dates to be specific, then in their qualified and professional opinion, they are in no doubt. It is a genuine and authentic item and one painted by that artist. This is usually fully qualified by its inclusion in any catalogue raissone, or by the guarantee of the opinion given by the appropriate and internationally recognized expert authority on the artist.

•  When Attributed to Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Sassoferrato is used, or it is similarly defined as 'Attrib. to ' [abbreviated,] or Attribué à, or ascribed to, then in their opinion it is 'probably' a work by the artist, at least in part. But... there is no guarantee. It is only an opinion that it 'possibly' may be by him..

This also applies to prints made 'after' an original work of art either by the artist or another artist/ printmaker.
