Investigating the Authenticity & Attributions of Works of Art believed to be by;
Simon Vouet & his Workshop
(1590 – 1649) French Baroque Era Painter & Portraitist
There is no necessity for a repeat of this artists biography here, except to reaffirm that Simon Vouet is considered to be one of the most influential and important French artists and teachers of his generation. Having achieved great fame in Italy, now armed with the new and fresh decorative techniques that were missing in France at this time, he returned to Paris and established a large studio - and workshop, through which a brand new generation of brilliant students and apprentices would emerge, as masters in their own rights and was instrumental in introducing figural allegories, mythology and into the elaborate decoration of the private homes and chateaus of the wealthy.
Many signed and unsigned works sometimes suddenly appear out of the woodwork which need to be validated as authentic. Any of which can be presented with a definitive and attractive attributions to an artist. So you must be seriously cautious that when they do appear, you clearly determine if the attribution itself is correct and that it can be fully substantiated? Sadly, many such claims cannot be and are patently wrong. Even in the past, some have turned an otherwise anonymous, yet similar work of art of the period or of an age near to the period of the artist, (but painted by a follower) simply working in their style, into one that is now quite magically 'by' that artist they want it to be by and convincingly so and this was as simple as it is commonplace. Frankly it's easily the most consistent form of attempted fraud we uncover and is effected by adding a forged signature, monogram or inscription to the newly acquired unsigned work. Regularly, next in line for serious scrutiny and some criticism, are deliberately misleading attribution claims. Ones that are either poor uneducated guesses, or worse, conscious attempts at deception as so much money can be involved. So there are always plenty of questions that need to be addressed and answered; The generally accepted terms used in descriptions of a work of art presented at auction, are set out in much greater detail later on this page. But it is worth remembering that with each specific variation of its wording, there is always a distinct difference with the possible final value of the piece.
In any of these respects we can certainly help you.

ABOUT A WORK OF ARTS DESCRIPTOR AND ITS TERMINOLOGY
*It is very important to clearly understand the general auction terms that are widely used in a published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be created in the 'manner of' the artist, or those which could be variants of the artists works of art that 'bear an applied signature' or monogram. In this case as if they were defining the works of the artist; Simon Vouet (1590 – 1649) French
