Frank Moss Bennett

British

1874-1952

Frank Moss Bennett is a name of an artist that has become hugely popular over the years right across the world. His fine pictures are now a firm favourite, not only in the UK, but in the USA, Canada and Australia too.

His art has always been synonymous with 'olden times', choosing historical scenes of the past, set in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, particularly gatherings of landed gentry and red coated men from the local fox hunt, to paint, like the painting below called Health to the Master.

Frank Moss Bennett drew his inspiration from Englands glorious past. These historical genre scenes, such as settings of people in taverns and other ordinary compositions showed events in the lives of important historical figures of the time, such as King Charles I who was popular figure, as was Sir Francis Drake. He painted Cardinals going about their daily business set in their private quarters and there are paintings of men of all eras playing games of chess, Dickensian men playing cards, Elizabethan and Stuart dinner parties, squires, landed gentry, buccaneers and dashing cavaliers, were all assigned to his vast production of paintings.

But he also painted cottage gardens and many architectural subjects, including interiors without figures. There are a large number of

paintings of important English buildings too. Paintings of inns, taverns and manors appear in his work load, Hawkenbury a favourite and he even ventured into France and Belgium to paint town and village scenes there.

But Frank Moss Bennet also copied works of other old masters and portraitists such as Raeburn  and wasn't shy of even copying Gainsborough and Velazquez.

A country Squire:

Most would expect the artist himself to be painting in the very period of history he chose to record. That would put him at hundreds of years ago, but you would be very surprised to learn exactly when he was working. An image of him appears below.

Frank Moss Bennett was born in Liverpool in 1874 and lived until the 1950's.

He was the second of four sons born to Kate née Stuart and Henry Mellor Bennett, who worked in an Iron Foundary and later become mayor of Liverpool.

Not an great deal is known about Frank Bennett early education, except that he was probably taught at home with his brothers and that he showed an amazing talent for painting at a very early age. Completing a portrait of his grandfather they say, at only five years of age.

Bennett later enrolled in Clifton College in Bristol where he completed his education, but inevitably joined the Royal Academy School of Art in London in 1886 and began a career in Portrait painting, such as the painting below. A Portrait of Penrose de Hochepied Larpent in a blue velvet dress with lace collar and cuffs, dated 1915. Though he also painted posthumous portraits of soldiers who did not return from the great war.

In a remarkable career he continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy for near thirty years.

Many of his works live on as fine reproductions, produced for well over a century.

Painting this type of these almost theatrical, retrospective genre scenes that he so vividly imagined, brought about much commercial success to Frank Moss Bennett and many of his works were commissioned by entrepreneur publishers to be sold across the world where you will see them commonly today.

Without a doubt, the most famous of Frank Moss Bennetts paintings is; 'The Landlords Story' (Illustrated left in its print form) as it has been reproduced over the years many thousands of times and has been his biggest commercial success he enjoyed as a painting. You will find it today featured on print seller sites all over the internet.

Unfortunately we still see paintings represented as originals with the forged signature of Frank Moss Bennett appearing on them. Often innocent copies that were made by students of the arts, emulators or admirers. Even professional copyist works made for the furnishing trade and widely available today from the far east, can end up being sold as legitimate.

Be equally cautious as there are reproduction of his works (prints) that have been bonded onto canvas, then overpainted by hand, but only in certain areas and then varnished, giving the appearance of an original. These are being passed off as originals, particularly on internet sites. With a little time and modern central heating, the varnish cracks slightly, adding even more credibility to the claim that it's an original Frank Moss Bennett !

Frank Moss Bennett Painting Authentication and Legitimacy Investigations

STEP ONE - THE PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF VIABILITY STUDY

Before entering into a full investigation of legitimacy or possible attribution of any work of art believed to be by Frank Moss Bennett, it is essential to consider and balance the viability of the project ahead.

With this in mind, we prefer to undertake a preliminary, professional pre-authentication assessment of the work in question for clients first. An important study and advisory, based upon the images you supply, the details of the work of arts history and provenance as is known to you and any previous research that you may have formerly conducted on it.

It aims to balance any obvious negative issues against the positive ones that are immediately recognizable and gauge if there are going to be too many problems that will prohibit us from being ultimately successful. So it's a logical and cost effective professional assessment for which there is a modest set fee.

Then you will be in a far better position to decide if the project is worth undertaking.

Please see our FAQ's which explains this process in detail.

Frank Moss Bennett not only worked in oils on canvas and linen, but also painted on artists board, canvasboard and card. Producing paintings in watercolour too. The diversity of his paintings range from small format to dramatically large works and is as vast as subjectively was

his choice of a theme.

Some more F. M. Bennett paintings illustrated below show the huge diversity of his subjects.
