  In his time regarded as the leading painter of group portraits, (conversation pieces) in Britain, the Royal Academician Johann Zoffany had many prominent patrons in the country, including royals and nobles. His imaginative settings in which he portrayed them were popular and he became increasingly famous with his paintings of dramatic theatrical scenes.

  His rare paintings are prized by collectors today, but as with all artists whose works that regularly fetch high monetary values at auction, many well exceeding their auction estimates, there are sometimes descriptor errors and historically incorrect attributions to evaluate and occasionally abuse to contend with. Wrongful attributions can and have been made genuinely and will need to be fully investigated and addressed, but some are deliberately cited to deceive and only come to light with detailed scrutiny and research today.

 There are varieties of levels of forgery to confront and identify, most commonly undertaken by the addition of a fake signature or monogram applied to an otherwise similar work of art. Usually one of a similar type, subject and of age, but one that was created by an anonymous follower. An artist who was painting fashionable subjective compositions. Unfortunately, this has been going on for centuries and makes the job of investigating the reliability of a given attribution or underpinning a work of arts authenticity, much more complicated.

 It is important and very useful to understand the generally observed and accepted semantics used in auction descriptions, (set out further down this page) as this defines exactly what the expert view is of the work offered and it also can drastically alter the financial outcome.
