The British sporting artist John Emms was to become one of the finest animal painters in the country during Victorian times. With a dynamic skill for portraying animals, particularly dogs, but also horses, he had no lack of patrons from within artistocratic and farming communities of England. His carefully crafted oil paintings are prized by collectors today, but as with all artists whose works regularly fetch high monetary values at auction, many well exceeding their auction estimates, there are sometimes descriptor errors and historically incorrect attributions to evaluate and balance and occasionally abuse to contend with. Wrongful attributions can and have been made that may need to be fully investigated and addressed. But some are deliberately cited to deceive and only come to light with detailed scrutiny and research. We see many varieties and levels of forgery too that we confront
and identify, most commonly undertaken by the addition of a fake
signature or monogram applied to an otherwise similar work of art to
that of the artist. Usually one of a comparable type, subject and of
age, but one that was created purely by an anonymous follower. An artist
who was painting fashionable subjective compositions. Unfortunately,
this has been going on in the art world for centuries and makes our work
investigating the reliability of a given attribution or underpinning a
work of arts authenticity complicated. It is important and very useful to understand the generally observed and accepted semantics used in auction descriptions, (set out further down this page) as this defines exactly what the expert view of the work offered is and it also can drastically alter the financial outcome. ***
