Confirming the Authenticity & Attributions of Works of Art believed to be by:
Edward Robert Hughes R.W.S.
British History and Genre Painter (1851-1914)
A firend of Holman Hunt with whom he collaborated and assisted, he was best known for mainly painting symbolist watercolours, though some saw him as a late Pre-Raphaelite artist. However, he produced some very well known and well loved 'chocolate box' works in Victorian times, though his name was seldom recognised as their creator. Working in the main in London, he had studied at the RA schools and with his artist uncle Arthur Hughes. He painted mainly romanticised genre works influenced from Giovanni Boccaccio and his novels.
Any attribution that is given to an artist or their workshop, should be examined carefully to verify that the quality and accuracy of that assignment is well established and rightfully ascribed. Confirming that it is specifically accurate, well researched and a credible academic attribution that is made to a possible author is essential and should not be taken lightly. As with all important artists works that can achieve high financial values, this is open to both honestly made attribution errors and deliberately misrepresented claims. There can be historically incorrect attributions to consider and sometimes abuse, by false attributions being made today, some deliberately devised to deceive. Some attributors guess, whilst others rely on a label or plaque on which to base their assumption as a reason enough to make the statement. So one should always remember, that an attribution is still only an opinion. It is a matter of personal interpretation and judgement as to how you respect it. As fine art consultants, we often encounter faking, usually undertaken by the addition of a forged signature or monogram added to an otherwise similar work of art, that is commenurate to the type and of the age to that of the artist it is claiming to be by. Inevitably it will one that was actually created by an anonymous follower of the painter and it is useful to recognise, that form of deception has been going on for centuries. To understand the generally observed and well accepted semantics that are used in auction descriptions, they are set out further down this page. They define exactly what the expert view of the work being offered is and they also have a distinct bearing on the financial outcome.

|
Step one in the Art Authentication and Attribution process. The Pre-Authentication Assessment
We strongly advise clients before embarking on a full investigation of legitimacy or an artist or studio attribution inquiry, that it is always wise to engage us to undertake an impartial preliminary assessment conducted first. One made to balance any issues that may be present that could make the longer term exercise unviable. This is a professional advisory service that we provide, based upon the images you supply, the full details of work of arts acquisition, its history and provenance as is known to you, along with sight of any documentation, previous research or analysis that you may have had formerly conducted on it. You should then have a far better understanding of both the prospects or any pitfalls we might face, before making a decision. This is a logical and cost effective professional review and advisory for which there is a modest set fee. Our FAQ section covers this in more detail.
We will respond to you promptly.
* ABOUT A WORK OF ARTS DESCRIPTOR AND ITS TERMINOLOGY * As if in this case as if they were defining the works of the artist;
Edward Robert Hughes R.W.S. - British (1851-1914)
*It is very important to clearly understand the general auction terms that are widely used in a published descriptor and to be cautious of works that may just be created in the 'manner of' the artist, or those which could be variants of the artists works of art that 'bear an applied signature' or monogram.
We can assist and advise you in all fine art related matters.
